Straining Forward to What Lies Ahead

Marathon runners are well familiar with the title of today’s sermon: straining forward to what lies ahead. With an eye on the prize, they push through the pain for temporal gain. Yet the prize for the Christian’s race is not here and now, it is there and then. Paul relates to his readers not only the goal which he is forcefully pursuing but the why and how of this pursuit. In light of the fact that we, like Paul, have not yet arrived at the finish line of this supreme race, we must ask ourselves: what is it that we are pouring ourselves into?
