Jesus Christ the Lamb: Slain, Sacrificed, and Standing

In today’s text from Revelation 5 on this Resurrection Sunday, John is given a vision of a scroll in the right hand of God on His throne. But he begins to weep loudly when it is revealed to him that no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. One of the elders said to him, “Weep no more; behold the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” John looks and sees, not a ferocious lion, but a diminutive lamb, standing as though it had been slain—Jesus Christ, the Lion-like Lamb and the Lamb-like Lion. What follows is that which could only follow—the greatest paean the world has known or could ever know.
